Friedreich's ataxia and juvenile diabetic joint contracture.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION THERE is a prevalence of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus in Friedreich's ataxia ranging from 8 to 20 per cent." 2 The occurrence of limited joint mobility in juvenile diabetes was first described in 19743 and subsequently has been identified in 50 percent of children after nine years of diabetes.4 We describe a case in whom joint contracture was discovered in a patient with a non-progressive form of Friedreich's ataxia. To our knowledge, this association has not previously been reported.

[Study of fatal cases of Friedreich's ataxia].
A study of 82 fatal cases of Friedreich's ataxia showed that over half the patients died of heart failure while nearly three-quarters had evidence of cardiac dysfunction during life. A high incidence of diabetes mellitus (23%) was another finding, and four patients developed diabetic ketosis terminally.

The association of diabetes mellitus with Friedreich's ataxia has been reported from time to time. If such an association were firmly established, it could have important implications for the genetic background and possible aetiology of the two diseases. Rossi (1893) appears to have been the first to describe the concurrence of diabetes mellitus with Friedreich's ataxia. In 1940, Schlezinger an...

Friedreich's ataxia, a hereditary disorder of the nervous system, is characterized by the onset of ataxia of gait, weakness and clumsiness of the limbs, and dysarthria of speech in young patients of either sex. Loss of tendon reflexes, usually combined with extensor plantar responses and impairment of vibration and joint sense, is often found. Nystagmus is common. Complications include mental s...
متن کاملNovel Missense Mitochondrial ND4L Gene Mutations in Friedreich's Ataxia
Objective(s) The mitochondrial defects in Friedreich's ataxia have been reported in many researches. Mitochondrial DNA is one of the candidates for defects in mitochondrion, and complex I is the first and one of the largest catalytic complexes of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) system. Materials and Methods We searched the mitochondrial ND4L gene for mutations by TTGE and sequencing on 30...
متن کاملFriedreich's ataxia. Revision of the phenotype according to molecular genetics.
Friedreich's ataxia is an autosomal recessively inherited neurodegenerative disorder caused by expansions of an unstable GAA trinucleotide repeat in the STM7/X25 gene on chromosome 9q. We studied the (GAA)n polymorphism in 178 healthy controls and 102 patients with idiopathic ataxia. The repeat size ranged from 7 to 29 (GAA)n motifs on normal chromosomes and from 66 to 1360 trinucleotide repeti...
